BLACKSTAFFE Harry (1858 - 1951) Great Britain / Rowing
Blackstaffe committed what could be construed as high treason when he won the skiff event in the rowing competition at the 1908 London games. A butcher by trade, Blackstaffe faced opponents who were mostly young students from Oxford and Cambridge. Contrary to the customary regulations in other disciplines, in this case, amateurs were allowed to participate and face the sport's student specialists. So, at the age of 41, Blackstaffe was a more competitive than his young opponents.
