The accomplishment of this American swimmer during the Atlanta games was no mean feat. Amy Van Dyken won four gold medals in four races. Having won gold with the American relay team in the 4x100 m freestyle relay and the 4x100 m medley relay, she won the 100 m butterfly and most notably the 50 m freestyle which earned her the title of best sprint swimmer at the time.This stupendous roll of honour was added to with a fifth gold medal at the Sydney games in 2000. Although she was beaten by her countrywomen Torres and Thomson in the heats of the individual sprint, she took part in the 4x100 m freestyle relay and once again had the pleasure of another gold medal dangling around her neck.
