WENDEN Mike (1949) Australia / Swimming
This Australian swimmer has not made world swimming history in terms of records, yet it was he who beat Mark Spitz in the 100 m free style race at the Mexico games in 1968. It was also he who beat Don Schollander in the 200 m free style race in the same games. These two Olympic gold medals did not make Wenden's name go down in posterity, yet those victories revealed the former, future champion, and made the latter decide to end his Olympic career. Renowned for his hardly orthodox style that owed much to power, he earned the nickname "the swimming machine". So much energy did he spend in winning the 200 m in Mexico, that he passed out.
