Alongside the Hungarian Von Halmay, he was the best swimmer in the 1904 Saint Louis games. Daniels invented the American crawl, the stroke that is practiced today, as opposed to the Australian crawl, the stroke practised in the disciplines beginnings. He won gold medals in the 200 and 400m freestyle events as well as in the 4x50 m medley, in muddy water.Four years in London, he was successful again, winning the 100 m freestyle. He also added to his collection of medals with a silver and a bronze.After retiring from swimming, he went on to become an excellent bridge player and on of the best golfers of his generation.
