DIDRICKSON Babe (1914 - 1956) United States / Track and field
An athlete in many disciplines, Babe Didrickson sporting career ranks as one of the most atypical that there has ever been. She was first of all Olympic champion in the 80 m hurdles and the javelin events at the 1932 Los Angeles games, two disciplines that frankly don't appear to be compatible. Yet this eclecticism was all the more evident in her amateur career. Firstly, she became the best woman golfer on the planet under the name of Mildred Zacharias, her name after marriage, before going on to be a professional basketball player and set the record for the longest throw of a baseball by a woman. An athlete whose physical qualities were outstanding, she died after an illness at the age of 42 years old.
