Amphetamines have a stimulating effect on the body. One of the drug's characteristics is its ability to provide an artificial substitute for adrenaline, which is produced naturally by the body when under stress. The first athletes to use amphetamines did so as early as the 19th century. However, it is in the mid-20th century that use of this drug became commonplace among professional cyclists. Today, use of this artificial substitute in professional sporting circles has been overtaken by steroids, anabolic steroids or erythropoietin (EPO)
