DURACK Fanny (1889-1956) Australia / Swimming
The very first Olympic swimming champion, she won the 100 metres freestyle competition at the 1912 Games in Stockholm. She could have remained at the firmament of world swimming for many years, but the First World War interrupted the domination which had seen her notching up all world records from 50 metres to the mile.Although she was still considered the world's best freestyle specialist on the eve of the Anvers Olympics, she was forced to pull out because of an operation. She therefore retired from competition and became a coach at the Sydney swimming club.
