A canoeing legend and four times Olympic champion. He won three of these titles at the same games in Los Angeles in '84, victorious in the C1 individual event and the C2 and C4 team events.He was again Olympic champion in the C2 event at the 1988 Seoul games with partner Paul McDonald.
