GARRRETT Robert (1875-1961), United States / Track and field
This solid American from Baltimore was the first Olympic shot putt champion in 1896. A few days later, noticing that the discus thrown by the Greek team was lighter than his, he decided to take part in that competition, too. And he won, to the great disappointment of the Greeks who considered this to be their private domain. An obsessive competitor, he also took part in the high jump and long jump and carried off two more medals, this time silver.
