GROSS Michael (1964), Germany / Swimming
The poet would have us believe that the albatross cannot walk because of its huge wings. They did not prevent Michael Gross from swimming. Albatross was the nickname given to this German swimmer whose long arms enabled him to travel through the water at great speed in a discipline, butterfly, where this anatomical detail is all important. Micheal Gross won several World titles and won at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in both 100 and 200 metre butterfly events. He was to keep one of his medals four years later in Seoul, proving that he was one of the best swimmers of his generation. The Albatross now uses his feathers to write with. He went on to become a journalist.
