According to historical documents, handball was invented in Germany at the end of the 19th century where it was called Tor Ball. It was played with 11 players in each team because it was played by footballers who could not play outside because of the cold. However, it would appear that the Czechs also played a similar game in the same period, called Ceska Hazena, as did the Danish, who called their sport handbol. Today it is played with teams of 7 (6 players and a goal keeper). Handball became an Olympic sport at the Berlin games in 1936, at the same time as basket ball, and Germany won the first title.
