ATLANTA - United States
The capital of the state of Georgia, famous for being the home of the Coca-Cola company, were the organisers of the centennial games in 1996. The close relationship between the soda company and the IOC apparently tipped the balance in favour of the American town, competing with Athens. Atlanta is also the base of CNN, one of the biggest American television channels. Three new sporting events were introduced at the Atlanta games: mountain biking, beach-volley and women's soccer. The Atlanta games went down in history for a very high profile media coverage, and the Olympic spirit suffered somewhat because of this. The games were marred by a terrorist attack that the United States were unable to prevent.
