Like many other Latin countries, Italy has produced some exceptional champions, rather than exceptional overall results, with two exceptions: the gymnasts, who have dominated the sport since the beginning of the century, and the fencers, who, along with the French, regularly win in fold and epee events. In the Winter Olympics, there have some brilliant Italian Olympic champions, such as skier Zeno Colo, nicknamed the mad skier, cross country champion, Francesco Nones, who was the first to beat the Scandinavians, or Alberto Tomba, nicknamed la Bomba, triple Olympic skiing champion between 1988 and 1992, and not forgetting Deborah Compagnoni, another great Olympic skiing champion. In the Summer Games there was the sprinter Pietro Mennea and the diver Klaus Dibiasi, triple champion from 1968 to 1976.
