AVEROFF Georges - Greece
This wealthy Greek patron saved the first games at Athens in 1896. King Constantine had most certainly made generous financial contributions to organise the Olympic games, but his contribution was insufficient. So, Georges Averoff funded the renovation work to Athens' ancient Panathanaic Olympic stadium. He was preoccupied with the details of the renovation work to the extent of having white marble columns installed. The grateful Greek people, and Olympic organisers, put up a statue in his honour at the centre of the stadium.
