AZARYAN Albert (1929) Armenia / Gymnastics
Inventor of a gymnastic movement on the rings named the Olympic cross which is a variation on the famous iron cross, this Armenian has one of the most impressive medal hauls in international gymnastics. Twice Olympic champion on the rings in 1956 at the Melbourne games and four years later in Rome, he was also gold medallist and silver medallist in the overall team competition in Melbourne and Rome respectively. The movement that he invented was established for the first time during a competition in Russia. After one of the judges had indicated to him that he had not held his iron cross for 3 seconds as the rules state, he turned toward each of the referees in each of the four corners and asked each of them if he had held it for long enough. And thus the Olympic cross was born.
