Dr Klimke had to wait until the end of his career as a horseman before winning a gold at the Olympic games.He was 48 when he took two gold medals with his horse, Alherich, in the dressage at the Los Angeles games in 1984. He won the individual medal and the team medal with Uwe Sauer and Herbert Krug.
