LAPEBIE Guy (1916) France / Cycling
Though the French remember cyclist Roger Lapébie because of his 1937 victory in the Tour de France, they tend to forget his brother, Guy.And yet Guy Lapébie made a name for himself in cycling at the Berlin games in 1936, winning three medals, including two golds. His first medal came on the track, while the others were won out on the road. He helped the team to a gold and won an individual silver medal.Out on the road, he should have won, but in the sprint, fellow Frenchman Charpentier held onto his shirt, overtook him and won. Lapébie put away his ill feelings and did not make a complaint, so as not to penalize the French team.
