Starting her career as a discus thrower at the 1956 games in Melbourne and going on to win two bronze medals in Rome and Tokyo, Manoliu finally gained her gold at the fourth attempt in Mexico City, 1968.Her appearance at Munich, four years later, was only a cameo role, but the length of her Olympic career - 16 years - is nonetheless remarkable.
