MATTHES Roland (1950) Germany / Swimming
The world's best backstroke swimmer dominated the scene in the late 60s and early 70s, taking the 100 m and 200 m golds at Mexico City and Munich. His long, slim physique was perfect for the discipline. He made an attempt at two further gold medals in Montreal, four years later, but was beaten by US swimmer John Naber. In 1978, Roland Matthes married Kornelia Ender, still considered to be the best woman swimmer of all time. The two champions have since divorced.
