Following the break up of the Soviet Union most of the ex Soviet states went to Barcelona as a united team under the CIS flag. The Baltic states however chose to go it alone and appeared under their true new identities.This is when Lithuania won its very first medal, in basketball. Estonia got a gold medal thanks to the woman cyclist Salumae, and only Latvia returned empty handed.
