An unknown before the Sydney Olympics on account of her youth, this petite Romanian left Australia covered in gold. She won the 100 and 200m backstroke, where she outclassed all her opponents, notably the French reigning world champion and former compatriot, Roxanna Maracineanu.Since then, she has seemed like a possible heir to the great Hungarian backstroke swimmer Krisztina Egerszegi.
