Having just relieved Mark Spitz of his world 400 m freestyle record, Alan Mosconi was one of the favourites for the Mexico City games.Unfortunately for him, he grew several centimetres in one go and this change in his morphology forced him to modify his style just months before the competition. At a disadvantage, he took only the bronze in the 200 m butterfly.
