MOTTO
The Olympic motto, "Citius, altius, fortius» was suggested to Pierre de Coubertin by a friend who was a teacher, Abbot Didon. It means "Faster, higher, stronger". Apparently, one of the men responsible for re-launching the marathon, the linguist Michael Bréal, prompted Abbot Didon to suggest this motto. It should be noted that Pierre de Coubertin never wrote nor probably never said that at the games, "It is the taking part that counts". However, he is thought to have said, in substance, that it was necessary to take part in order to gain the best results possible.
