PATTON George (1885 - 1945) United States / Modern pentathlonThis young cavalry lieutenant was not yet a national hero when he went to compete in the modern pentathlon at the Stockholm games in 1912, and indeed he only took fourth place. He was the only non Scandinavian among the six top finalists in the event. He might well have won the gold medal had it not been for a mistake in the shooting contest. This was the same Patton who thirty years later with the rank of general led the American third army which liberated Europe from Nazi Germany.
