By winning the 20 km event at the Atlanta games this walker became the first Ecuadorian to win an Olympic gold medal. Pérez also had 4th place finishes in the 20 km walk at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia and the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
