BAXTER Irwing (1876-1957) United States / Track and fieldDuring the 1900 Paris games, this American Indian ignored religious traditions which prevented several of his fellow countrymen from participating in Olympic events held on a Sunday. He took advantage of this situation and went on to win the high jump and the pole vault, and won a silver medal in the standing high jump event. He continued to perform brilliantly in international athletic meetings after the games, thus proving that his success in Paris was entirely justified.
