Sheridan, who originally came from Ireland, was the first Olympic discus champion, and the 1904 Saint Louis games. At that time the discus technique was no more elaborate than in throwing a stone.Sheridan kept the title in London four years later, but the sport was what was then called "free style discuss. At the same time he won the classical discus event, which is closer to the event such as it is practised today. He was the first athlete to use the modern technique which consists in using centrifugal force to gather momentum and throw the discuss much further.Sheridan was to win five gold medals in all, including those he won at the extra games played in Athens in 1906.
