SHINOHARA Shinichi (1973) Japan / Judo
Heavyweight world champion and champion in all categories in 1999 in Birmingham, this Japanese judoka is a national hero in his country. He was therefore favourite to win in Sydney. In the final he came up against the Frenchman David Douillet who was injured a year previously and thus unable to bar his path in England.Yet, in Sydney, whilst the combat often turned to the advantage of the Japanese, it was the Frenchman who became Olympic champion. His coaches, the famous former judokas Saito and Yamashita, made a protest, but the judges did not change their decision.
