SKIING, ALPINE
It was not until the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen games that piste or Alpine skiing became Olympic events. At that time the only medals were awarded for a joint combination of downhill racing and slalom. Now all Alpine ski sports can be competed for as individual events, whether it be slaloms, downhill or Super G.In slalom the classic event (giant slalom) involves passing about thirty gates, whereas the special slalom has 55 to 75 gates. In order to make the event even more difficult the organisers can vary the number of "open" and "closed" gates and double bends.Unlike the downhill event which is skied as fast as possible along the most direct route, the Super G includes a few gates. The drop in altitude in Alpine skiing varies between 500 m and 1000 m according to the event.
