Vezzali completes unique Olympic foil gold medal treble - 8/11/2008
Maria Valentina Vezzali won a third straight women's foil fencing gold medal on Monday at the Beijing Games while South Korea's Nam Hyun-Hee denied Italy a medal sweep. Vezzali, 34, edged Nam 6-5 in the gold medal bout to become the first woman to win three Olympic fencing titles in a row in the same event.
She also won gold in the event 2000 and 2004 and has two team titles as well from 1996 and 2000 for a total gold tally of five. Vezzali also has 10 world titles as the dominant foil fencer of the last decade.
Margherita Granbassi defeated the 1992 gold medallist Giovanna Trillini 15-12 in an all-Italian bronze medal bout.
Trillini's 15-10 semi-final defeat at the hands of Nam denied the dominant Italians a sweep, while Vazzali routed Granbassi in the other semi-final.
