Innsbruck to host 2012 Youth Olympic Games - 12/15/2008
The International Olympic Committee announced today that Innsbruck, Austria has been elected to host the 2012 Youth Olympic Winter Games.
The games will add another chapter to the city’s winter sports legacy, having already hosted two Olympic Winter Games (1964 and 1976). With vast experience and many competition-ready venues, the city was as a safe choice for the IOC in light of the current economic downturn.
Innsbruck beat out Kuopio, Finland in an election among IOC members last month. Lillehammer, Norway and Harbin, China were also in the running but were eliminated after evaluation reports last month.
IOC president Jacques Rogge introduced The Youth Olympic program last year to interest young people in sport and get them physically active.
